Solar-light battery energy, dimming and runtime questions.

A product label cannot describe your sky, geometry, night schedule or maintenance context. This worksheet helps capture the variables a supplier should ask about.

Plan around the weakest operating season.

The U.S. Department of Energy explains that solar radiation varies with location, season, time of day, landscape and weather. Its Solar Radiation Basics is general educational guidance, not a solar-light sizing method or a Xiuben runtime result.

For your project, ask the designer to identify the lowest-resource months within the required operating season and assess those alongside the lighting schedule. Keep these inputs in the project worksheet below:

Input to recordQuestion for the design response
Location and operating monthsWhich local solar-resource dataset, period and seasonal values support the assessment?
Panel position and shadeWhich tilt, direction, nearby obstructions and seasonal shading were assessed at the proposed position?
Required night scheduleWhat must stay lit during critical hours, what dimming is acceptable and what low-sun scenario is being assessed?
Maintenance accessWho can inspect and clean the panel, and which assumptions should be revisited after installation?

Put operating assumptions beside the purchase price.

DOE FEMP exterior-lighting purchasing guidance, updated June 2023, compares purchase cost with lifetime energy cost and defines luminaire efficacy as light output relative to electrical input. This is U.S. federal procurement guidance; its example prices, hours, savings and purchasing requirements are not a quotation or an applicable rule for every buyer.

Use the following comparison brief for the alternatives under consideration. Leave unsupported costs or replacement intervals open; a low purchase price or an efficacy figure alone does not answer the project question.

Compare on one basisAsk each proposal to state
Lighting serviceThe same area, mounting geometry, required lighting result, night schedule and permitted dimming.
Installation and energyIncluded equipment and civil/electrical work; measured operating input and control assumptions; local tariff for any grid-supplied option.
Maintenance and replacementAccess and labour assumptions, cleaning plan, replaceable parts, evidence for replacement intervals and responsibility for each cost.
Comparison period and unknownsA common assessment period, the assumptions behind each total and which unconfirmed costs could change the decision.

This brief does not calculate or promise a Xiuben saving, payback period or product life.

Separate a lighting test from a site design.

The IES public catalogue description of ANSI/IES LM-79-24 covers reproducible optical and electrical measurements of solid-state lighting under standard conditions, including flux, electrical power, efficacy, intensity distribution and colour. This is the public description of a paid measurement method, not a report showing that a Xiuben model was tested.

What to request for the chosen configuration

  • Identify the tested model, electrical and control settings, test conditions and report date.
  • Ask which measured quantities and photometric data are available for the exact configuration.
  • Have the project designer assess those data against the installation geometry and required lighting result.

A measurement-method citation is not design approval. It does not establish battery autonomy, seasonal charging, installed lighting results or compliance for your project.

Prepare energy questions for an exact configuration.

Select the configuration being discussed. Its panel and battery details are included in the editable request below. Actual stage consumption, usable storage and charging limits still need confirmation before an autonomy estimate.

Keep the project details with your selected configuration.

Record the location, installation and lighting schedule for discussion with the supplier. Blank fields stay unknown. The summary uses your descriptions; it does not assess solar-light performance.

Your project details stay in this page until you copy or download them. Download the project JSON to resume later. Importing restores your notes and reloads the current configuration record from this website; the saved snapshot is not used as current evidence. Reloading clears your notes. This tool gives no performance, compliance or availability result.

What do the numbers in a solar-light quotation mean?

Keep panel ratings, lamp input, battery energy and the operating programme separate. None of these alone establishes how a light will perform at your site.

InformationHow to read itWhat to confirm
Solar-panel ratingA panel value belongs to the named configuration. It is not the lamp's actual input power.Site location, seasonal sun, shading and orientation
Actual starting lamp inputA model name or advertised wattage is not a measurement.Measured input and the starting power used for the chosen dimming profile
Nominal battery energyStated voltage × Ah gives calculated nominal Wh, not tested usable or delivered energy.Usable-capacity basis, controller losses and other loads
Operating programmeHours and percentage settings describe the schedule; they do not guarantee autonomy.Critical lighting periods, motion interaction and site conditions

See the quoted dimming example below, then include these questions in your solar street-light brief or configuration enquiry.

Twelve hours does not mean twelve hours at full power.

The factory-confirmed programme steps down from the agreed starting lamp power: 1 hour at 100%, 3 hours at 70%, 4 hours at 50%, then 4 hours at 30%. Confirm the starting power and any motion-sensor interaction for your chosen configuration.

The schedule totals 6.3 equivalent starting-power hours. If the actual starting lamp input is 60 W, the staged calculation is 60 + 126 + 120 + 72 = 378 Wh (0.378 kWh) per night. This is a conditional planning example, not a measured result for a catalogue model.

Picture the reduced-power night, step by step.

Icons are illustrative artwork, not product photography. Every hour, percentage and watt-hour figure below repeats the factory-confirmed programme and the worked example above — nothing here is a new or measured claim.

Follow the energy from site to night.

Each decision affects the next: daylight collection, conversion, storage, control, optical delivery and maintenance.

1. Collect

Project location, seasonal sun, shade, panel orientation and available surface.

2. Store & control

Night schedule, control profile, critical periods and autonomy expectation.

3. Deliver light

Task, geometry, mounting, distribution, glare context and surrounding surfaces.

4. Maintain

Access, replaceable parts, cleaning, inspection and service responsibility.

Ask for the assumptions behind the answer.

  • Which exact model and variant?Keep the identity consistent across quote, sample, specification and documents.
  • Which site inputs were used?A design response should refer back to the location, geometry and operating profile.
  • What is verified on the sample?Agree the acceptance checks and evidence before scaled production.
  • What remains project-dependent?Record exclusions and open questions instead of filling them with assumptions.
