Coastal outdoor lighting starts with the exposure map.

Map what reaches each light, where water can collect and how it is mounted, then we shortlist Xiuben models and configurations for review against that site. Salt-laden air, splash, wind-driven rain, sheltered recesses and cleaning practice each raise different questions on the same site.

What to send for a coastal project.

A coastal brief names the exposure zone, nearby activity, mounting location, service access and the documents you need. With it we can quote a named model and configuration for the site.

  • Map the siteMark open frontage, sheltered walls, deck edges, gates, paths and enclosed recesses.
  • Record contactNote salt spray, standing water, wash-down, airborne deposits and wind direction.
  • Set the taskState the area to be seen, operating schedule, controls and energy context.
  • Name acceptanceList the drawing, sample, finish, installation and document checks needed before order.

Ingress class and salt-spray test: two different documents.

Ask separately for the enclosure, the finish and the installation. The two public standards references below describe what each kind of test covers.

Document typeWhat the source coversWhat to request or keep separate
Enclosure ingress classificationThe IEC 60529 consolidated-edition catalogue describes classification of protection provided by electrical enclosures: the IP Code. This is a public description of a paid international standard.Request the exact enclosure and configuration and its supporting report.
Salt-spray test methodThe ISO 9227:2022 public abstract describes salt-spray test methods for metallic materials and protective coatings. It does not set a product's exposure duration or interpretation of results.Request the tested specimen and finish, method and edition, exposure duration, acceptance criteria and recorded result.
Coating and material descriptionA model-specific material and finish schedule, including the housing, fasteners, brackets and interfaces.Ask whether any submitted report covers the same materials, preparation, finish and assembled configuration being quoted.
Installed exposure and maintenanceYour site record: spray or deposits, water collection, mounting, cleaning and service access.Send it with the enquiry so the project team can assess it alongside the exact product documents.

Where the fixture lives, not only how near the water.

Describe the installation's actual exposure. Distance from the shoreline alone does not describe it.

Open or sheltered?

Is the location open to wind and rain, under an overhang, inside a recess, or behind a screen that may trap deposits?

What reaches it?

Could spray, wash-down water, salt-laden air, cleaning agents, dust or runoff reach the housing, joints or cable route?

Where can water sit?

Identify horizontal ledges, mounting interfaces, cable loops and any geometry that could retain water or debris.

What changes over time?

Record seasonal wind, nearby traffic or port activity, landscaping irrigation and any planned construction around the installation.

Materials and finish for the quoted model.

Ask for the exact quoted configuration, its drawing and the written description for that model. A category image does not show the housing, fastener, coating or finish.

  1. Housing and trim

What materials are identified for the submitted model, including visible trim and concealed parts?

  2. Finish system

What finish is proposed, where is it applied and what preparation or colour information is recorded?

  3. Mixed-material interfaces

Which parts meet at joints, fasteners, brackets or post interfaces, and what does the drawing show there?

  4. Change control

Which materials or finishes are fixed in the sample, quotation description and final purchase description?

Cable entries, seals and mounting.

The enclosure alone does not describe every opening, cable entry, joint or mounting interface used on a site.

Cable entry

Ask where the cable enters, how routing is shown, whether a drip path is planned and which entry components are included in the quoted configuration.

Seals and joints

Ask which joints are opened during installation or service, which components are replaced, and what the assembly drawing identifies.

Bracket or pole

Record the substrate, pole or wall interface, fixing layout, orientation, access and any third-party mounting parts.

Site workmanship

Set who records installation steps, cable routing, fastener treatment and photographs at acceptance.

Maintenance and sample review.

Put the maintenance plan in the brief: access method, cleaning approach, inspection points, replacement process and who keeps the records. Review a sample of the configuration that the final project documents will describe.

Coastal models by family.

Start from the family pages, then send the exposure map with your shortlist.

Send the exposure map with the enquiry.

Include site photos or drawings, location type, exposure notes, mounting detail, intended task and the sample or document checks you need, and the enquiry is matched to a named model and configuration for review.

Notes

Neither standards reference above is a Xiuben product report, a blanket coastal approval or a prediction of installed life. The IEC catalogue is not evidence that the quoted light was tested, and an ingress classification does not establish its coastal service life. The ISO 9227 methods are not intended to rank different materials or predict long-term corrosion resistance; a stated number of test hours is not a conversion to years by the sea, and the abstract is not a product test result.

The questions on this page are enquiry prompts, not a prescribed test programme or a statement that any Xiuben model meets a project's requirements. Confirm the actual model, configuration, documents and sample observations before relying on a material, finish, seal design, environmental rating or service outcome.

Exposure, installation and exact configuration remain project questions. No universal coastal-suitability statement is made here.
